Do you love playing quick quizzes like the ones we often find on Pinterest?
Haven’t found one? Sorry 😐
But even if you’ve never played such quizzes, I have good news!
And if you’re a mad reader like me, you’re going to love it!
What I’ve Found Recently
As readers, we all love discussing our favourite books and genres. If you’ve been around my blog for a while, you probably know I mostly talk about gothic literature and dark-themed fiction—I just love them!
But we rarely pay attention to what we truly want to read beyond just the genre. I mean, genre isn’t the whole of literary existence. We should also appreciate and discuss other elements of literature. But someone else actually did this before me, and I’m so glad I found it!
So, long story short, I was skimming through Instagram when I came across a reel where someone claimed they could tell what type of reader I am based on colours. And at that moment, I got excited because guess what? Quizzzzz Gameeeeeee!!!
So yeah, I headed to his website. That person is Steven James Reese, and his Instagram is @stevenjreese.
What Type of Reader Am I?
The concept blew my mind!
He created a Reader Colour Test—yep, like a personality test, but for readers. Based on the colours you choose, it reveals what kind of reader you are. Not just genres, but vibes. Perspectives. Emotional tone. It digs into why you read, how you connect with stories, and what you seek between the lines.
I took the test out of curiosity, but ended up feeling like someone had just read me like a book.
So, basically, before revealing my type, I’d like to clarify what I thought about my reading type and the test. I mean, I’m obvious about the genres I like and the kinds of plots I usually look for in books. I thought I was a Midnight Reader (dark, misty night, antique, and rustic). I’m drawn to introspective narratives, emotionally heavy plots, and poetic writing styles. I enjoy subtle plots and genres too, but I feel more connected with books that explore philosophical and intellectual ideas, often with emotionally intense scenes and themes.
And to my surprise, I received my answer with more clarity!
A Purple Reader According to Reader Colour Test 💜🔮
Apparently, I’m a Purple Reader! And that hit a little too close to home (in the best way possible).
The description? Spot on. It says Purple Readers are drawn to the unexpected, the kind of books that don’t follow rules, break every storytelling norm, and throw genre labels out the window. And yep, that’s me (I do love certain genres, but unfortunately and fortunately I’m not limited to them). **I’m not here for cookie-cutter plots or predictable endings. I crave the strange, the layered, the stories that mess with your head in all the right ways.
I’ve always been the kind of reader who loves it when a book completely shatters my expectations (and soul). Whether it’s a novel that feels like a surreal dream or a nonfiction piece that pushes the boundaries of what’s possible, I find myself wanting ideas that challenge how I think and feel. Those are the books that stay with me.

Traditional plot arcs? Meh. I’m more interested in the author’s voice, the risk they’re taking, and the strange, brilliant little corners of imagination they’re exploring. I want fiction that feels like a fever dream and nonfiction that dares to imagine futures we haven’t even begun to understand.
Honestly, my bookshelf isn’t safe, it’s a chaotic, magical playground of the beautifully bizarre.
It’s books like House of Leaves, The Brothers Karamazov, or Night Film that keep me up at night, not just because they’re dark or mysterious, but because they challenge the entire concept of what a story even is, philosophically and practically.
What I Like Most About This Reader Colour Test
What I loved most is how it reminded me that there’s more to literature than genre. Sometimes, we pick up a book not because it’s labelled “fantasy,” “gothic,” or “romance,” but because it feels right to pick. Because it carries a certain weight, tone, or elementary depth that resonates with who we are in that moment.
Steven’s whole framework is about understanding reading as an experience, not just a habit. And honestly? It made me reflect on my own reading patterns in a way I never had before.
So if you’re a reader (which I assume you are, because you’re here), go check it out. Take the quiz. Reflect. And maybe, just maybe, you’ll fall a little more in love with your reader self. ❤️
